  • Visual Arts
    • Exploring the Art of Children's Books
      • Ages: 4-6

        Explore art through your favorite stories! Each week we will look at the work of a different illustrator such as Eric Carle, Leo Lionni, Petra Mathers, Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart, and make our own artwork based on their methods. Bring some of your favorite books to share as well! Dress for mess!

    • Exploring Drawing and Painting
      • Ages 7-12

        Each week work with a different media and projects including still life drawings with charcoal, portraits with pastels, and landscape paintings with tempera paint! Using art history as inspiration, we will explore a variety of techniques in each medium. Dress for mess!

    • Sumi Painting
      • Ages 13-Adult

        Learn the traditions and techniques of Sumi ink brush painting through various demonstrations and practice. You will explore East Asian concepts of line, brush stroke and composition with a focus on the plum, orchid, chrysanthemum and bamboo. Learn to express yourself through this unique cultural style.

        Myung Sook Kim is a Maryland artist who received her MA in studio art from the Cleveland Institute of Art in Ohio. She recently had a solo exhibit of her paintings at the Columbia Art Center in Columbia, MD, and has exhibited internationally at LaMer Gallery in Seoul, Korea; Degar Gallery in Virginia; Muse Gallery in Philadelphia; the Towson Commons Gallery in Baltimore and Maryland Hall in Annapolis.

        Class also available Wednesday evenings from 6:30 pm - 9:30 p.m.

        Designed for high school students seeking intensive and highly individualized instruction to build a portfolio ready for college or A.P. Explore cutting edge contemporary artists and the latest techniques in artistic media.

      • Tim Anderson received a B.A. in Music Performance from the University of South Florida and continued post-graduate studies at the Peabody Conservatory and Syracuse University. He is currently on the faculty at U.M.B.C. and the School for the Arts. Tim teaches at the Center on Tuesdays in Room 14. Please contact him at 410-832-5289 for more details.

      • ages 7-11

        Through acting and singing games, story theatre, and improvisation, discover how actors prepare for performances. On the last day, put your new skills to work with a performance of a medley of Broadway hits for a friends and family!

    • Dance Floor Survival Skills
      • ages 15+

        This class introduces the basic dance steps for many ballroom and swing dances. Additional dance techniques which are fundamental to all dances will also be covered. In this fun, relaxed setting each student will soon be dancing the night away! No partner required.
